Aims

To provide an overview on inhalation sedation and an update in principles and practice of inhalation sedation for the dental team

Objectives
  • Review the theoretical basis for the use of nitrous oxide in inhalation sedation and uses in dental care
  • Identify the clinical aspects of using nitrous oxide for inhalation sedation, including indications for and contraindications to use
  • An update of the current guidelines in conscious sedation for dentistry and an awareness of the practical and clinical governance requirements of these
  • Identify the adverse effects of nitrous oxide on use and exposure to patients and the dental team and how to minimise these.
  • An Update on developing UK legislation on greenhouse emissions and how this might impact clinical care.
