Aims

To equip participants with the knowledge and tools necessary to make their practices more Deaf-friendly, fostering a culture of accessibility and understanding.

Objectives
  • Identify and explain the differences between BSL, SSE, and Lip-speaker interpreters
  • Distinguish the role of a BSL/SSE/lip-speaker interpreter and how to work with them
  • Recognise situations where equipment, such as hearing aids or loop systems, can enhance communication for individuals with hearing loss
  • Recognise what not to do when communicating with patients who are deaf or have hearing loss
Learning outcomes

At the end of the session you will be able to:

  • Hold basic signed conversation, using British Sign Language.
  • Know different skills of the interpreters and how of book them.
  • Understand how to work with the interpreters.
  • Use equipment for people with hearing loss.
  • Know what language to use and not to use.
