Aims

To promote awareness of the Health and Wellbeing of 'children looked after' and 'care leavers' for dental practitioners.

Objectives
  • Indicate why a child becomes looked after and how we can improve their health and wellbeing
  • Define the LAC legal framework and health’s responsibility towards complying with statutory requirements
  • Discuss how to raise a safeguarding concern regarding a child looked after and how to escalate
  • Clarify the importance of sharing information and acting as an advocate. Taking into account consent and confidentiality issues
  • Describe ACES, and their effects on the physical and emotional health of looked after children and young people
  • Examine issues such as trafficking, sexual exploitation, FGM and radicalisation and know how to refer
  • Explain Corporate Parenting Principles
  • Demonstrate the importance of multiagency working
  • Recognise and understand the needs of care leavers.
Learning outcomes

Following the session participants will have an increased awareness of the importance of Health and Wellbeing when dealing with children looked after and those who are to be care leavers.
