Aims | To provide a refresher of the the 2017 classification system of periodontal diseases, the HGDM toolkit for managing and treating periodontal diseases and an update on and the new S3 guidelines for managing periodontitis. |
Objectives | - Review the 2017 classification of periodontal diseases and conditions, how to implement it into practice using the British Society of Periodontology's (BSP UK) implementation plan
- Examine the HGDM toolkit and how and why it differs from the International workshop classification system
- Define BSP UK's version of the new S3 guidelines for treating periodontitis and the HGDM approach for managing and treating periodontal diseases in primary care
- Explain the HGDM care pathway approach for managing periodontal diseases in primary care and how to implement them into practice including referral pathways for level 2 and 3 care for periodontitis patients
- Recognise the challenges of delivering periodontal care under the current contract and how to deliver phased care for periodontitis patients under the UDA banding system

Learning outcomes | Following the session, delegates will: - Have an understanding with the 2017 classification for periodontal diseases, the new S3 guidelines for treating periodontitis and Health Gums DO Matter toolkit approach for screening, diagnosing and managing periodontal disease in primary care.
- Have a greater understanding of how to manage periodontal diseases in primary care under the current NHS contract applying a phased care treatment approach
