Aims

To equip dental nurses with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to safely and effectively apply fluoride varnish under the prescription of a dentist or as part of a structured oral health programme.

Objectives
  • Refresh participants’ knowledge of the evidence base for fluoride varnish in caries prevention, including any recent guideline updates and emerging research.
  • Reinforce best practice application techniques, ensuring attendees feel confident and competent in delivering fluoride varnish safely and effectively.
  • Strengthen understanding of safeguarding, consent, and documentation requirements when providing fluoride varnish in clinical and community settings.
  • Share practical insights from recent clinical experiences, highlighting common challenges and effective approaches when applying fluoride varnish in children and adults.
  • Provide a Q&A and discussion forum to address participants’ queries, promote peer learning, and clarify areas identified in previous sessions.
Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the latest evidence base and clinical guidance relating to fluoride varnish for caries prevention, including updates since their previous training.
  • Demonstrate an up to date understanding of correct fluoride varnish application techniques, recognising common errors and how to avoid them in practice.
  • Apply appropriate consent, safeguarding, and documentation procedures in line with professional, legal, and organisational standards.
  • Evaluate clinical case examples to recognise when fluoride varnish is indicated, contraindicated, or requires modified approaches.
  • Reflect on their own practice and identify areas for improvement or further learning related to the safe and effective application of fluoride varnish.
