  • To develop an awareness of mental health and resilience and build knowledge and skills for the promotion of mental health and support resilience of Foundation Dentists (FDs) and Foundation Therapists (FTs).
  • To develop knowledge & practice skills for identifying and supporting Foundation Dentists (FDs) and Foundation Therapists (FTs) experiencing mental health difficulties, including risk assessment.
  • To explore the practical application of structured mental health support for Foundation Dentists (FDs) and Foundation Therapists (FTs).

Session 1

To provide an introduction to knowledge and skills for the promotion of mental health & building resilience.

Session 2

To build skills to identify and respond to common mental health problems, including signposting to specialist advice & support.

Session 3

To develop knowledge & skills for the integration of structured mental health support for foundation dentists and foundation therapists.

Objectives

Session 1

  • To provide an overview of the concept of mental health & resilience
  • To explore the factors that impact on mental health within the context of Foundation Dentists/Foundation Therapists and the role of TPDs in supporting resilience
  • To examine how the cognitive behavioural model of emotional disorder provides an evidence-based framework for understanding common mental health problems.
  • To identify opportunities and build skills

Session 2

  • To explore the risk factors for the development of mental health problems, spotting early indicators and recognising ‘red flags’
  • To build skills to identify & respond to FDs experiencing mental health problems, including suicidal thoughts.
  • To provide information and practical guidance for signposting to specialist support

Session 3

  • To explore factors that are indicators of the need for structured mental health support
  • To identify opportunities and build skills for the integration of structured mental health support for into Foundation Dental Training Programmes
  • To facilitate the development of action plans for the integration of mental health support and resilience building for TPDs and Foundation Dental Training Programmes
Learning outcomes

Session 1

The TPD will utilise the learning to support conversations about mental health and building resilience.

Session 2

The TPD will utilise the learning to identify and respond to those experiencing mental health problems and suicidal thoughts.
