Dr Damian O’Connor, Clinical Teaching Fellow in Restorative Dentistry, School of Dentistry, University of Manchester. Educational Supervisor Wythenshawe Scheme. Qualified from Manchester Dental School in 1980. Have been Trainer/educational supervisor in General Practice for past 15 years. I started teaching part time at Manchester Dental Hospital in January 2004 as a Clinical Teaching Fellow in Restorative Dentistry and am also course lead for "Introduction to Independent Dental Practice " for year 5 students.

I have a special interest in the restoration of the heavily restored dentition using current materials and techniques including adhesive dentistry, direct and indirect restorations and the restoration of implants. A particular area of interest is the restoration of endodontically treated teeth with adhesive posts and cores.

Provide an update on current thinking and techniques on the use of composite resin for the restoration of the worn and heavily restored dentition.

Objectives

1 Placement and anatomical contouring of posterior composites.

2 Treatment of Tooth surface loss/wear affecting anterior teeth with direct composite.

3 Principles of cavity preparation for direct composite placement to include cuspal coverage as required.

4 Finishing techniques for composite restorations.

Learning Objectives:

Update on current thinking and techniques for treatment of caries and toothwear.

The diagnosis and treatment of tooth surface loss with direct composite.

The placement and finishing of composite restorations in posterior and anterior teeth.

The understanding of relevant bonding techniques and materials.
