Aims

Aims:

  • To increase understanding of conventional CT, cone beam CT, magnetic resonance imaging and ultrasound, and their role in maxillofacial dentistry
  • To impart confidence in the principles of cross sectional imaging, selection criteria for referral and interpretation of the reports
Objectives

Objectives:

  • To provide a basic explanation of the physics and techniques of CT, MRI and Ultrasound
  • To demonstrate the differences in imaging appearances of dentoalveolar structures between the modalities
  • To discuss the use of cross sectional modalities as an adjunct/alternative to conventional planar radiographs in oro-facial disease

Learning Outcomes:

  • Have a basic grasp of the physics, advantages and disadvantages of CT, CBCT, MRI and Ultrasound
  • Be able to recognise these techniques from images
  • Appreciate when to request these investigations in dentoalveolar diagnosis
