Mike is a general dental practitioner working in private practice at ‘The Berkeley Clinic’ in Glasgow. He graduated from Glasgow University’s Dental School in 1999. In 2005, he graduated with a Masters in Hypnosis Applied to Dentistry from the University of London, having been awarded a ‘distinction’ for the Diploma. He has a Postgraduate Certificate in the Management of Dental Anxiety from the University of Edinburgh. Mike has published many papers on hypnosis, dental phobia management and bruxism and has appeared on TV four times (most recently on BBC's Horizon) demonstrating the use of hypnosis in pain control. Mike is a Past President (2008-10) of “The British Society of Medical and Dental Hypnosis (Scotland)” and is President again (2014-2016). He founded The International Society of Dental Anxiety Management (ISDAM) and was also Chair of the 23rd World Congress on Psychosomatic Medicine which was held in Glasgow in August 2015.

Aims
  • The purpose of the session is to show the importance of building rapport in dealing with the anxious dental patient and how communication style and language choices affect outcomes.
  • The session will provide an introduction to dental hypnosis. Participants will learn about the uses of dental hypnosis and be able to refer appropriate cases.
  • The application of hypnotherapy in managing the anxious patient will be detailed. This session will be a platform from which participants will be able to further their interest in hypnosis.
Objectives
  • Introduce new rapport, language and communication skills to everyday practice
  • Utilise basic relaxation techniques effectively with anxious patients
  • List the uses of hypnotherapy in dentistry
  • Define the nature of hypnosis, trance and suggestion
  • State how hypnotherapy may be used in managing dental anxiety and phobia
