Aims

To help Foundation Dentists provide better Oral Surgery care for their patients, by improving their Oral Surgery skills in the following areas:

· Assessment of surgical dentistry patients in general practice.

· Undertaking simple surgical procedures, fractured teeth and retained roots, effectively and safely.

· Being aware of, and where appropriate, being able to undertake simple third molar removal, apicectomies on anterior teeth, biopsy of small, non-suspicious lesions and primary closure of an ora-antral communication.

· Being aware of personal limitations in provision of Oral Surgery.

Objectives

· Assess surgical patients

· Demonstrate the principles of Flap design, Bone Removal and Suturing

· Demonstrate principles of third molar removal, apicectomies and biopsies

· Review common complications and their management

· Identify appropriate surgical instruments

· Discuss appropriate referral practice and limitations and patient safety

Learning Outcomes

· Be able to assess patient’s surgical needs, and refer where appropriate

· Develop their oral surgery skills as a general dental practitioner to be able to provide simple surgical removal of fractured teeth, retained roots, simple third molars, apicectomies on anterior teeth, biopsy of non-suspicious lesions, and primary closure of an oro-antral communication, where appropriate, and within skill set

· Review surgical instrument needs within a general practice environment.
