Aims

To help delegates understand the principles of current GDC standards for dental professionals, so as to enable them to behave in an ethical and professional manner at all times.

To clarify participants safeguarding roles and responsibilities.

To increase the participants’ confidence and skills in raising the issue of smoking with clients/patients

Objectives

To overview the current GDC Standards of conduct, performance and ethics that govern dental professionals

To examine the principles of ethical behaviour relevant to dentistry, including honesty, confidentiality, personal and professional integrity, and appropriate moral values

Understand the legal contexts and define terms

Identify how concerns may arise and how to share information and how to respond

Know the impact on children, young people and vulnerable adults

To update participants’ knowledge about the issue of smoking in terms of current statistics and trends, impact on health, benefits of quitting

To provide participants with opportunities to consider the most useful ways of raising the issue of smoking with client/ patients

To provide basic information about the stop smoking aids available to support quit attempts

 

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of the session delegates will be able to:

Describe and summarise the key issues relating to ethics, in accordance with GDC Standards, and ethical guidance, so as to meet the GDC’s nine core ethical principles of practice at all times

Know parenting stresses, children vulnerabilities, understand when and how to share information and pass on concerns, list some signs and symptoms, know how to handle disclosures.

Increased knowledge about current trends and statistics in relation to smoking, its impact on health and the benefits experienced when people quit
