Aims

The Critical Appraisal course enables you to systematically assess the trustworthiness, relevance and results of published papers.

Objectives

Understand how to:

  • formulate and define a research question clearly
  • understand which types of study design are most appropriate for which types of clinical questions and establish how this affects the interpretation of the results
  • identify and assess the implications of different types of bias and confounding factors
  • understand how to interpret statistical analyses and common statistical tests
  • calculate quantitative measures such as relative risk, relative risk reduction, absolute risk, and Number Needed to Treat
  • interpret measures of statistical uncertainty such as p-values and confidence intervals
  • understand how to appraise treatment studies, prognostic studies, diagnostic studies, systematic reviews and meta analysis

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

By the end of the course delegates will be able to assess the validity and reliability of a scientific paper by assessing the strengths and weaknesses in the methodology and interpretation of study results.
