| Aims | To develop Dental Foundation Trainees’ knowledge and confidence in recognising common orthodontic problems, identifying cases that may be appropriately monitored in general dental practice, and recognising when referral for specialist orthodontic assessment is indicated. The session will also enable trainees to develop an understanding of the IOTN and its application in clinical practice, including the use of the Aesthetic Component to support discussion with patients and the appropriate completion of orthodontic referral documentation. |
| Objectives | Recognise common features of malocclusion and identify orthodontic problems that may require further assessment. Understand which orthodontic presentations may be monitored within general dental practice and which may warrant referral for specialist opinion. Understand the principles of interceptive orthodontics and the importance of appropriate timing of referral. Explain the purpose and principles of the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN). Develop confidence in assessing and reasonably scoring the IOTN Dental Health Component (DHC) and Aesthetic Component (AC) appropriate to their level of experience. Use the IOTN Aesthetic Component as an aid to discussing orthodontic concerns with patients. Recognise the importance of providing accurate and relevant clinical information when making an orthodontic referral. Complete orthodontic referral proformas appropriately, including relevant findings relating to the presenting malocclusion. Appreciate the importance of appropriate referrals in supporting effective use of specialist orthodontic services and NHS resources. |
