Aims

To introduce clinical academic career pathways and support participants in planning their professional development towards a tenured academic role by understanding training routes, career structures and progression, while beginning to build an academic CV.

Objectives

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the clinical academic career pathway from Foundation Dentist to Professor.
  • Recognise the role of postgraduate qualifications and clinical academic training programmes in career development.
  • Identify the value of professional bodies, networking and academic engagement.
  • Understand different academic contracts and career structures.
  • Explore promotion criteria and the components of a successful academic portfolio.
  • Develop the foundations of an academic CV.
Learning outcomes

On completion of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the clinical academic training pathway and identify opportunities such as NIHR Integrated Clinical Academic Training (ICAT) and doctoral fellowships.
  • Explain how postgraduate qualifications support research skills development and academic career progression.
  • Recognise the benefits of engaging with professional organisations, conferences and research networks to build an academic profile.
  • Differentiate between academic contract types and understand how clinical and academic responsibilities can be integrated.
  • Describe the key criteria for progression to a tenured academic role, including research outputs, funding, teaching, leadership and impact.
  • Produce a structured academic CV using the University of Manchester format, identifying current strengths and areas for future development in support of a clinical academic career.
