Aims

To introduce the knowledge, skills and opportunities involved in becoming a research-active clinician, enabling participants to engage with publishing, peer review, research funding and leadership while contributing to the wider research community.

Objectives

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the process of publishing research and the responsibilities of authorship.
  • Recognise the purpose and principles of peer review.
  • Identify research funding opportunities and understand the components of successful grant and fellowship applications.
  • Explore opportunities for developing a research career alongside clinical practice.
  • Appreciate the importance of collaboration, mentorship and research impact within academic and clinical settings.
Learning outcomes

On completion of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the process of preparing and submitting a manuscript for publication, including authorship responsibilities and principles of open science.
  • Apply the basic principles of constructive peer review to critically evaluate a research paper.
  • Identify appropriate sources of research funding and explain the essential components of competitive grant and fellowship applications.
  • Recognise how research funding, collaboration and dissemination contribute to successful research programmes and improved patient care.
  • Explain the importance of research leadership, mentorship, networking and the Research Excellence Framework (REF) in supporting academic and clinical research careers.
  • Evaluate examples of funded oral and dental research, reflecting on how successful projects align with funder priorities and address important evidence gaps.
