DescriptionThis session explores how research data are transformed into meaningful evidence through analysis and interpretation, before examining how research findings can be effectively disseminated to influence clinical practice, policy and future research. Participants will gain an understanding of qualitative and quantitative data analysis, interpreting results, presenting research at conferences, publishing in peer-reviewed journals, and engaging with wider communities.

Aims

To equip participants with the knowledge and skills to analyse and interpret research data, and to effectively disseminate research findings to maximise their impact on clinical practice, policy and future research.

Objectives

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the principles of qualitative and quantitative data analysis.
  • Interpret research findings critically and recognise common sources of bias and limitations.
  • Explore different methods of disseminating research to academic, clinical and public audiences.
  • Understand the principles of presenting research at conferences and publishing in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Recognise the importance of community engagement in translating research into practice.
Learning outcomes

On completion of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Differentiate between qualitative and quantitative approaches to data analysis and select appropriate methods for different research questions.
  • Interpret research findings in the context of study aims, recognising potential bias, limitations and overinterpretation.
  • Evaluate appropriate dissemination routes, including conference presentations, peer-reviewed publications and community engagement.
  • Prepare the key elements of an effective conference poster and understand the principles of delivering an engaging oral presentation.
  • Describe the process of publishing research, select an appropriate journal, and recognise the characteristics of predatory journals.
  • Produce a structured conference poster that clearly communicates the background, methods, results and conclusions of a research project or dataset.
