Aims

To develop the knowledge and skills required to initiate a research project, from identifying an evidence gap and formulating a research question through to understanding study design, research governance, ethics, and the practical aspects of delivering a study.

Objectives

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Identify evidence gaps through effective literature searching and review.
  • Formulate clear research questions, aims and objectives.
  • Understand the key components of a research protocol and appropriate study designs.
  • Recognise the practical considerations involved in delivering a research study.
  • Understand the principles of research governance, ethics and patient and public involvement.
  • Appreciate the importance of Good Clinical Practice (GCP) training and plan its completion.
Learning outcomes

On completion of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Identify and justify an evidence gap suitable for research.
  • Develop a focused research question with appropriate aims and objectives.
  • Outline the essential components of a research protocol and select suitable research methods.
  • Describe the practical processes involved in delivering a research study, including participant recruitment and data collection.
  • Explain the ethical and governance requirements for conducting research within the NHS and the importance of involving people with lived experience.
  • Recognise the role of NIHR Good Clinical Practice (GCP) certification in ensuring safe, ethical and high-quality research and plan to complete the training.
