| Objectives | - Understand the professional and legal responsibilities of prescribing as a dentist.
- Use the British National Formulary (BNF) and national guidance to prescribe safely and appropriately.
- Recognise when medicines are indicated and prescribe them safely for common dental conditions.
- Select appropriate analgesics and medications to manage pain and anxiety, considering patient-specific risks.
- Identify potential drug interactions, contraindications and side effects, and know how to manage them.
- Discuss the appropriate use of antibiotics, including antimicrobial stewardship and current prescribing guidance.
- Recognise when local and systemic antimicrobials are appropriate in the management of periodontal disease.
- Understand the role of medicines in managing medical emergencies, including the use and maintenance of emergency drugs.
- Reflect on prescribing decisions through clinical case discussions to support safe treatment planning.

| Learning outcomes | Prescribe medicines safely, legally and effectively using the BNF and current national guidance. Make appropriate prescribing decisions based on a patient's medical history, diagnosis and treatment plan. Safely prescribe and, where appropriate, administer medicines used in the management of dental emergencies. - Recognise and manage common drug interactions, contraindications, adverse effects and prescribing errors.
- Select appropriate analgesics and anxiolytic medications using a patient-centred, risk-based approach.
- Apply the principles of antimicrobial stewardship and prescribe antibiotics only when clinically indicated.
- Appropriately prescribe local and systemic antimicrobials in the management of periodontal disease where indicated.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the contents, maintenance and appropriate use of the emergency drug kit in dental practice.
- Reflect on prescribing and treatment planning decisions to support continuous improvement in clinical practice.
