DescriptionThis hands-on study day provides Foundation Dentists with the opportunity to refresh and develop their amalgam and composite restorative skills using phantom heads in a simulated clinical environment. Trainees will complete a range of restorations under the guidance of Educational Supervisors and the Training Programme Director, receiving feedback to support their clinical development and confidence.

Please arrive from 9am for Registration to start promptly at 9:30am

Refreshments

Tea, coffee and water are available at the centre.

You are welcome to bring a cold lunch with you to the centre to consume in the breakout area, however if you would like anything hot this will need to be purchased off site as we cannot heat up food for delegates. You are entitled to claim a £5 lunch allowance for attendance at study days. Please make sure you keep your receipts. There are a large number of places to eat or purchase food next to the venue.

Aims

To provide Dental Foundation Trainees with an opportunity to refresh and enhance their restorative dentistry skills in a supportive simulated environment, using phantom heads and receiving guidance from Educational Supervisors and the Training Programme Director.

Objectives

Review the principles of cavity preparation and restoration placement for both amalgam and composite restorations.

  • Practise a range of direct restorative procedures on phantom heads in a simulated clinical setting.
  • Develop confidence in restorative techniques, including material handling, isolation, contouring, and finishing.
  • Receive constructive feedback from Educational Supervisors and the Training Programme Director on their clinical technique and decision-making.
  • Identify areas for further development and create action points to support ongoing clinical progression.
Learning outcomes

Following participation in this study day, Foundation Dentists will be able to:

  • Demonstrate appropriate cavity preparation techniques for common amalgam and composite restorations.
  • Place amalgam and composite restorations to an acceptable clinical standard within a simulated environment.
  • Apply current best-practice principles for direct restorative dentistry.
  • Critically reflect on their own performance and respond to feedback to improve future clinical practice.
  • Show increased confidence and competence in undertaking restorative procedures in primary care practice.
