Aims

To equip dental nurses with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to safely and effectively apply fluoride varnish under the prescription of a dentist or as part of a structured oral health programme.

Objectives
  • Discuss the Benefits of Fluoride: Explain the role of fluoride in preventing dental caries and promoting oral health.
  • Clinical Evidence: Review the scientific evidence supporting the use of fluoride varnish.
  • Dental Health and Disease: Identify common dental diseases and understand how fluoride varnish can help prevent them.
  • Contraindications and Safety: Recognise contraindications for fluoride varnish application and identify fluoride toxicity.
  • Practical Application: Demonstrate the correct technique for applying fluoride varnish.
  • Oral Health Education: Provide basic oral health advice tailored to patients' needs.
  • Patient Management: Develop skills in clinical patient management, communication, and consent.
  • Scope of Practice: Determine the legal and professional boundaries of dental nurses in fluoride varnish application.
