Aims

To provide an overview of Direct Access NHS treatment within the scope of practice of a GDC registered Dental Therapist.

Objectives
  • Recognising what is expected of the GDC Registered Dental Therapist before they may commence seeing patients; including performer numbers, knowledge and awareness of NHS rules and regulations, GDC Scope of Practice.
  • Discuss what should be communicated to the patient before they see the Dental Therapist, including how the reception team gain consent for the patient to see a Dental Therapist.
  • Describe the assessment phase of the appointment, including radiographic regulations and guidelines, valid consent and NHS paperwork
  • Explain the protocols for undertaking the treatment phase of the appointment, including medical exemptions and POM medicines, recall mapping to NICE guidelines, closing courses of treatment.
  • Identify the protocol for onward referring for treatment the scope of practice of a Dental Therapist
Learning outcomes

Participants will be able to apply the essential professional, legal, and clinical requirements for Dental Therapists in NHS settings, including compliance, communication, treatment protocols, prescribing practices, and referral procedures.
