SubjectBSPD Lecture
DescriptionA webinar for BSPD Members - Dentistry has a long history of applying regenerative techniques, and recent advances in pulp biology have strengthened the scientific foundation for vital pulp therapy. This minimally invasive approach preserves pulp vitality, reducing the need for more extensive interventions such as root canal treatment. The course explores the biological principles, clinical techniques, and evidence supporting vital pulp therapy as a predictable and effective means of maintaining the tooth’s natural defence and regenerative potential.

Aims

To provide clinicians with the knowledge and skills to confidently identify indications for vital pulp therapy (VPT) and perform it predictably in practice.

Objectives
  • Review the biology and defence mechanisms of the dentine–pulp complex relevant to clinical decision-making.
  • Critically evaluate current diagnostic approaches and terminology in pulpal disease.
  • Discuss clinical indications, expected outcomes, and evidence-based techniques for VPT.
  • Demonstrate practical strategies for managing injured or exposed pulp in a minimally invasive manner
Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the physiology and reparative potential of the dentine–pulp complex in a clinical context.
  • Apply diagnostic reasoning to determine when VPT is appropriate.
  • Perform vital pulp therapy with predictable, evidence-based clinical techniques.
  • Preserve pulp vitality to improve long-term tooth survival and reduce the need for invasive treatment.
