Aims

To provide attendees with a grounding and understanding of oral cancer – diagnosis, management and beyond

Objectives
  • Familiarise learners with common presentations of oral cancer and other head and neck cancers to facilitate effective screening and referral from the primary care setting
  • Understand pre-malignant oral conditions Develop confidence in dealing with oral cancer patients in primary care
  •  Understand the role of the MDT in the patient journey
  •  Gain understanding of the treatment of oral cancer in hospital setting
  •  Gain confidence in caring for post operative head and neck cancer patients on the ward – including free flap monitoring
Learning outcomes

By the end of the study day students should be able to

  1.  Recognise lesions suspicious for head and neck cancer
  2.  Understand their role as dentists in referring and treating oral cancer patients
  3.  Understand the patient journey in hospital
  4.  Understand the usual treatment of head and neck cancer
  5.  Be more confident in helping to care for post operative head and neck cancer patients in the hospital and beyond
