DescriptionThis course will provide dental hygienists and dental therapists with essential knowledge on utilising the exemptions mechanism in compliance with the Human Medicines Regulations.

*There will be a requirement to complete a portfolio of 5 cases before a "Certificate of Completion" will awarded and must be completed within 3 months of training.

It is advised that where possible, you use a laptop/PC.

Aims

To equip dental hygienists and dental therapists with the knowledge and skills necessary to safely and effectively administer and supply specific medicines within the legal framework of Human Medicines Regulations.

Objectives

Knowledge of legislation

Demonstrate an understanding of the legal framework of the Human Medicines regulations and its relevance to the practice of dental hygiene and dental therapy.

Identify the legal and professional boundaries regarding administration and supply of specific medicines within dental clinical practice

Clinical practice

Conduct comprehensive patient assessment to determine the need for specific medicines, considering patient history current medications and potential allergies.

Informed consent

Effectively communicate with patients to obtain informed consent ensuring patients understand the purpose, benefits and any risks involved in the administration and supply of medicines provided.

Monitoring and management

Monitor patients for adverse reactions and manage any complications effectively including providing the appropriate documentation and aftercare.

Reporting adverse events

Identify, document and report adverse drug reactions promptly and appropriately following established protocols

Reflective practice

Use reflective practice to evaluate personal performance and identify areas of improvement in the safe administration and supply of specific medicines
