This course is subsidised by NHS England. The subsidised fee for this event is £75 per person, which includes the practical sessions and consumables, a sandwich lunch and refreshments.

The course closing date is Tuesday 23rd April 2024. However, places on this course are limited to 12 and will be allocated on a first come first served basis.

Cancellation policy: A refund, less £20 administration fee, is guaranteed for cancellations received up to 3 weeks before the course (23rd April 2024 at 5pm). No refund will be made for cancellations received after this date or for failure to attend. Substitutions fulfilling the criteria may be made at any time prior to the course start.

Mandatory: Dental Hygienist, or Dental Therapist

The aim of this course is to improve knowledge of, and ability to, provide intra-oral local anaesthetic for dental procedures in a safe and effective manner, introducing alternative techniques and improving knowledge of direct access legislation. Delegates will be provided the opportunity to practice, on phantom heads; infiltrations techniques, ID blocks and to explore alternative delivery techniques, including The Wand and Oraqix.

By the end of the event, delegates will be able to:

• Identify the head and neck anatomy of relevance to intraoral local anaesthetic techniques in dentistry.
• Explain the neurophysiology of pain and pain control.
• Apply the mechanisms of action of dental anaesthetic agents (including Lignocaine and Articaine) to clinical situations.
• Discuss direct access legislation and be able to construct appropriate Patient Group Directions or patient-specific prescriptions within their practice.
• Confidently select and administer clinically appropriate local anaesthetic techniques at safe dosages.
• Interpret medical histories of relevance to the administration of local anaesthesia.
• Minimise the risk of local and systemic complications of local anaesthesia and have knowledge of how to manage these appropriately should they occur.
• Describe alternative local anaesthetic techniques.
• Formulate treatment plans involving local anaesthetic in accordance with direct access.
• Confidently administer local anaesthetic to children and adults.
