Aims

To discuss the various approaches available to the clinician in managing dental caries in children

Objectives
  • Illustrate caries management techniques in children, including the conventional approach of non-selective caries removal and pulp therapy, and minimal intervention dentistry including Hall Technique, silver diamine fluoride and selective caries removal.
  • Discuss indications and contraindications of each technique and when it may be appropriate to use them.
  • Review how to carry out pulp therapy as well as place Hall Technique and Silver Diamine Fluoride on carious primary teeth.
Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, delegate should be able to:

  • Discuss challenges presented to clinicians in managing dental caries in children
  • Identify the process of dental caries and the concept behind minimal intervention dentistry
  • Recognise the evidence base behind each caries management technique and make informed decisions as to the most appropriate caries management technique for carious primary teeth in children.
  • Explain how to carry out pulp therapy as well as place Hall Technique, and Silver Diamine Fluoride on carious primary teeth
