Aims
  • To revisit x-ray production, the key principles of radiation protection and the biological effects of ionising radiation 
  • To review the key elements of IRR17 and IR(ME)R 2017 as they apply to dental radiography, with due regard to the roles and responsibilities of the dental team
  • To highlight the expected content of the new ‘Guidance Notes for Dental Practitioners on the Safe Use of X-ray Equipment’
Objectives
  • Refresh their knowledge of x-ray production, the key principles of radiation protection and the biological effects of ionising radiation
  • Review the key elements of IRR17 and IR(ME)R 2017 as they apply to dental radiography and their individual roles and responsibilities
  • Clarify (as far as is possible) the new Guidance Notes for Dental Radiography
Learning outcomes

By the end of the session delegates will be able to:

  • State the key principles of Radiation Protection.
  • Summarise the biological effects of Ionising Radiation with due regard to Dental Radiography.
  • Understand the legal requirements of compliance with regard to IRR17 and IR(ME)R2017.
