To provide a better understanding of orthodontics relevant to the GDP.

Objectives
  • Assessment of malocclusions, use of indices, treatment and referral guidelines
  • Understanding orthodontic tooth movement principles
  • Explore the various orthodontic systems on the market
  • Explore a career in orthodontics

Learning Outcomes:

  • Review eruption dates
  • Identify and assessment of common malocclusions and use of orthodontic indices
  • Management of treatable malocclusions
  • When to refer
  • Understand the physiological process invloved in tooth movement and the terminology and order of tooth movement
  • Understand the similarities and differences of various removable and fixed appliances available to the GDP
  • Hands on experience with bracket placement, archwire ligation and wire bending
  • Look at the current specialist pathway for orthodontics, alternative courses and further education options.
