DescriptionThe ‘Healthy Gums Do Matter’ programme is designed to support dental teams to effectively manage growing numbers of patients with periodontal concerns in daily practice. This course will give you guidance and tools on screening, diagnosis and management of this disease through the user friendly toolkit which has been recently updated in 2019.

Aims

To improve the management of the growing numbers of patients with periodontal disease by giving guidance for screening, diagnosis and management of periodontal disease.

Objectives
  • Recognise the importance of screening, diagnosing and treating periodontal disease and the legal and ethical duties of care
  • Understand the new 2017 classification of periodontal diseases and conditions and how to implement it into practice using the British Society of Periodontology's implementation plan and the HGDM toolkit.
  • Identify your role as clinicians within periodontal disease
  • Discuss the challenges of managing periodontal disease working under the NHS contract
  • Interpret the Healthy Gums DO Matter toolkit for managing periodontal disease working under the NHS contract
  • Recognise the importance of effective communication and behaviour change
  • Review how to assess patient engagement
  • Discuss record keeping with periodontal disease and how to protect yourself from medico legal problems
  • Consider and plan how the toolkit can be implemented within your own practice
Learning outcomes

Delegates will be familiar with the Health Gums DO Matter toolkit approach for screening, diagnosing and managing periodontal disease, and will have a greater understanding of how to manage periodontal disease in primary care under the current contract.
