Aims

The aim of this session is to:

  • Demonstrate improved understanding of the risk factors for oral cancer.
  • Recognise the role of dental staff in Smoking Cessation
  • Signpost to Specialist Stop Smoking Services.
Objectives
  • Recognise the need for confidence in advising patients on prevention for oral cancer
  • Differentiate between recurrence and treatment related effects.
  • Explain the content of tobacco products and why people smoke
  • Review the use of e cigarettes
  • Explore the use of CO monitoring in smoking cessation
  • Illustrate how to deliver very brief advice effectively to trigger a quit attempt
Learning outcomes

Following the session, delegates will have:

  • Better ability to recognise a range of suspicious signs in mouth, tongue, lips and neck.
  • Improved confidence in referring on the cancer and routine pathways.
  • Knowledge of how to refer to the Specialist Stop Smoking Service.
