Aims

To consider autism from the perspective of autistic people themselves, and how we can implement what we understand about autism in a dental setting.

Objectives
  • Listen to an autistic person and expert describe their own experiences of growing up with autism
  • Discuss the language used when referring to autistic people, and the concept of neurodiversity
  • Clarify how to support autistic children and young people with their oral health
  • Discuss how to communicate successfully and engage positively with autistic young people
Learning outcomes

Participants will:

  • learn something new from the lived experience expert, about autism.
  • have a better understanding of communication strategies that may be more successful when working with autistic people
  • feel confident about the language around autism and neurodiversity.
  • have some ideas to take back to their work of how to have positive interactions with autistic people and be better equipped to support them to receive dental care.
