Aims

To provide resources to enable therapists to understand and recognise oral cancer and be confident in managing the onward referral of these patients.

Objectives

The session will cover:

  • How to undertake a comprehensive extra and intraoral examination.
  • Recognition of the clinical presentation and management of suspicious oral lesions including premalignancy and oral cancer.
  • Referral of patients following the correct referral pathways.
  • Dental care during cancer treatment.
Learning outcomes

Following the session, therapists should:

  • Know how to complete a thorough extra- and intra-oral examination to allow detection of suspicious lesions.
  • Have increased confidence in recognizing symptoms (red flags) and signs of suspicious oral lesions including oral epithelial dysplasia and oral cancer
  • Be able to make an appropriate onward referral to secondary care in line with national guidelines
  • Have gained improved knowledge of the common oral manifestations of cancer treatment and dental management of patients undergoing cancer treatment.
