Aims | NHS Rules and Regulations To understand NHS rules and regulations relative to a dental therapist. Review the role of the dental therapist. Finance - To make the therapists aware of their tax commitments as an employed or self-employed individual

Objectives | NHS Rules and Regulations - Discuss the professional responsibility of a dental therapist within and outside the NHS, including the scope of practise, rules regarding patients’ direct access to treatment provided by other dental professionals in accordance with current GDC standards and demonstrate appropriate knowledge and understanding of regulation and legislation that impacts on dentistry
- Review the structure, principles, rules and regulations associated with working as a therapist within the NHS including the current NHS contract in England
- Discuss and debate the avoidance and management of complaints in accordance with current GDC standards, and how/when to seek the advice of a professional indemnity organisation
- Evaluate the financial management of a general dental practice and other relevant clinical environments, the charging structure relating to treatment provided for patients in general practice and other relevant clinical environments, including NHS dentistry, private fee per item and capitation schemes
- Discuss contracts and agreements, as they relate to salaried and self-employed professionals.
Finance - Discuss the types of tax therapists will pay
- Demonstrate how to calculate their annual tax liabilities
- Distinguish the differences between self-employment and employment
- Examine the PAYE system and how monthly pay is calculated

Finance At the end of the lecture, therapists will understand their commitments as a self-employed individual, including record keeping, annual accounts and annual tax return. |
