Aims

To provide participants with an evidence-based understanding of periodontal treatment aetiology, classification, diagnosis and treatment using the Healthy Gums Do Matter toolkit (HGDM) and the new S3 guidelines for managing periodontitis.

Objectives
  • Outline the importance of screening, diagnosing, and treating periodontal disease and the legal and ethical duties of care
  • Define the 2017 classification of periodontal diseases and conditions and how to implement it into practice using the British Society of Periodontology's implementation plan and the HGDM toolkit and how and why it differs from the International workshop classification system
  • Identify the new BSP’s UK version of the new S3 guidelines for treating periodontitis and the HGDM approach for managing and treating periodontal diseases in primary care
  • Recognise the importance of effective communication and applying behaviour change approaches to patients
  • Discuss how to assess patient engagement and its importance in treating periodontal diseases
  • Clarify how to use and apply the HGDM patient agreement and periodontal information leaflet and consent form
Learning outcomes

Following the session delegates will:

  • Have been introduced to the HGDM approach for managing periodontal disease and how to assess patient engagement and use the HGDM patient agreement and periodontal leaflet and consent form.
