Aims

To update the dental team on issues relating to the provision of Conscious Sedation for adult and paediatric patients. This symposium is designed for the dental team treating patients using conscious sedation techniques in primary care. This will include pharmacological and non-pharmacological techniques and guidelines for current practice. There will be discussion on alternative techniques for sedation and when these may be appropriate. There will be opportunities to discuss challenging cases with a panel of experts.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the event participants will be able to:

  • Discuss the range of behavioural methods of anxiety reduction and evaluate their effectiveness and limitations
  • Discuss the appropriate uses of both adult and paediatric sedation in primary dental care and identify common sedation related complications
  • Critically assess risks associated with IV sedation and discuss ways to improve patient safety
  • Identify when a referral to specialist services is required
  • Discuss the range of monitoring techniques available and when these may be required
  • Identify alternative sedation techniques that are available and when these may be suitable for patient care
  • Discuss consent for sedation patients and how Montgomery may affect this
