Aims

To provide the participant with an evidence-based understanding of periodontal treatment aetiology, classification, diagnosis and treatment using the Healthy Gums Do Matter toolkit (HGDM) and the new S3 guidelines for managing periodontitis.

Objectives
  • State how to use, apply and record different periodontal indices and detailed pocket charting
  • Evaluate record keeping with periodontal diseases and understanding how to protect yourself from medico legal problems
  • Recognise the HGDM care pathway approach for managing periodontal diseases in primary care and how to implement them into practice and referral pathways for level 2 and 3 care for periodontitis patients
  • Examine the challenges of delivering periodontal care under the current contract and how to deliver phased care for periodontitis patients under the UDA banding system
  • Demonstrate how to apply the HGDM toolkit and how it can be implemented within your own practice
Learning outcomes

Following the session participants will:

  • Have an understanding with the 2017 classification for periodontal diseases, the new S3 guidelines for treating periodontitis and Health Gums DO Matter toolkit approach for screening, diagnosing and managing periodontal disease in primary care.
  • Have a greater understanding of how to manage periodontal diseases in primary care under the current NHS contract applying a phased care treatment approach
