DescriptionDental procedures such as extractions can sometimes go wrong learn how to manage complications by gaining the skills and confidence to deal with these situations. This course offers a highly interactive learning experience that combines lecture, hands on training with pig’s jaws along with a further half day session where you will have the opportunity to observe an experienced Tier 2 oral surgeon within the primary care setting.

Aims

This course has been designed for the Dental Practitioner who wishes to develop their clinical competencies in providing regular minor oral surgery (MOS) within the dental practice.  Delegates will be able to perform MOS within a simulated setting together with developing their skills and confidence by learning new techniques and by observation in a real patient setting. 

Objectives

Identify, diagnose and assess patient suitability for MOS within practice.

  • Recognise how to move on from simple to surgical extraction ( coping with broken teeth).
  • Discuss appropriate referral procedures.
  • Recognise appropriate instruments and materials.
  • Demonstrate the principles of flap design and bone removal.
  • Demonstrate the principles of suturing.
  • Display closure of an OAC/ flap advancement periosteal release.
  • Discuss the management and associated complications if impacted teeth.
  • Discuss the management of appropriate pain and anxiety control.

Optional half day observing a Tier 2 provider in primary care.

  • Obtain insight and appreciate the roles and experiences of others
  • Discuss and reflect upon your role, needs and opportunities with others. 
Learning outcomes

Delegates will have greater confidence in conducting routine minor oral surgery within general practice and understand when it is appropriate to refer.
