DescriptionThis is a combined course comprised of an Online course with 5 days of face to face taught sessions. This course has been developed to ensure that dental nurses receive the knowledge & competencies to enable them to take radiographs under prescription.

The BDA Online course will begin for delegates on Monday 12th March 2018

The taught sessions will be held at Piccadilly Place, Manchester on the following dates:

  • 16th March 2018
  • 27th April 2018
  • 18th May 2018
  • 29th June 2018
  • 7th September 2018

Students would be expected to:

  • To bring their notes with them to each taught session.
  • Be prepared for each session
  • Bring with them a list of any questions that they may have from either the material that they have covered or from their experiences in practice.

Exam date: Saturday 15th September 2018. 

It is expected that by registering for this course the student agrees that they are able to be released from practice for each teaching session.

 To gain the qualification, students will need to:

  • Attend study days
  • Gain clinical experience in taking radiographs by completing a practical portfolio
  • Take a 1 hour true/false & best answer examination on the theoretical aspects of dental radiography
  • Complete a practical work based portfolio

For the practical portfolio, students must take a minimum of 40 radiographs under supervision, which must include the following types of radiographs:

  • 20 periapicals (using the paralleling technique)
  • 10 pairs of bitewings
  • 10 panoramic radiographs

These radiographs are not required to pass the qualification & will not contribute to the student's final grade, but will be recorded in the student's transcript to demonstrate their experience.

Please note this qualification is subsidised by Health Education England.

The qualification will be awarded by the BDA and we will require an exam fee of £124

Aims

The aims of the course are to:

  • Produce competent dental radiographic operators who are aware of their own responsibilities and limitations.
  • Promote acquisition of the skills, attitudes & behaviours that facilitate effective and safe use of radiation in dental practice.
  • Fulfil the legal requirements of the Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposures) Regulations 2018 with regards to “adequate training” of operators.
  • Fulfil the requirements of the syllabus in dental radiography for dental nurses as approved by the British Society of Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology (BSDMFR).
  • Prepare candidates for assessment by the British Dental Association (BDA Education).
  • Foster the knowledge & understanding, skills & attitudes that will promote effective lifelong learning & support professional development.
