Morning sessions 

9:30 – 11:00 - Legionella: What are your obligations? - Piotr Leszkiewicz - Basic principles of legionella management within the domestic hot and cold water systems and dental equipment.

11:30 - 12:30 - Bridge2Aid: Strategies for better oral health in the developing world – Kiaran Weil - Dental Volunteering in East Africa, its place in the WHO Strategy and a Personal experience

Afternoon session

You will need to pick one topic each from session A & B:

Session A - 13:30 - 14:45

  •  Safeguarding children with competence and confidence – Lisa Pilkington - From this course you will gain an understanding on how to make parents aware of your safeguarding responsibilities, identify those children that are more at risk of abuse or neglect and how manage the difficult conversation with parents.

OR

  • Mind your back - Tracy Thompson - Revision of the importance of good posture and ideal positioning for clinical dental treatment.

Session B - 15:15 - 16:30

  • Why do patients complain? - Stuart Allan - A detailed exploration of why some patients complain, why some do not and what they might want.

OR

  • Reflecting on your professional development plan: Keeping in-line with enhanced CPD – Barbara Brown - A session helping delegates to develop their skills in identifying and planning to meet their personal and professional development needs.

  • This course will teach learners to understand the health risks associated with legionella bacteria and the importance of preventing and controlling any exposure.

Bridge2Aid: Strategies for better oral health in the developing world

  • To raise awareness of Oral Health needs in the Developing World Present some of the Strategies being used
  • Recognise parallels with needs in UK
  • Demonstrate the value of Team Work
  • Inspire Dental Professionals to consider if, and how, they could participate

Safeguarding children with competence and confidence

  • All dental professionals need to be able to be confident in managing conflict with parents and make safeguarding referrals to protect and safeguard children from abuse or neglect?

Mind your back

  • To reinforce the importance of good working posture to reduce the risk of work-related musculoskeletal disorders.

Why do patients complain?

  • To develop an understanding of why complaints are or are not made.

Reflecting on your professional development plan: Keeping in-line with enhanced CPD

  • To raise awareness of the importance of having an effective personal and professional development plan (PDP) within the context of enhanced CPD and provide some strategies for delegates to improve their skills in creating a PDP.
Objectives

Legionella: What are your obligations?

  • Know history of legionnaires’ disease
  • Know background of legionella bacteria
  • Know the key legislations and that relates to the control of legionella
  • Be able to identify the health risks associated with legionella bacteria
  • Understand basic control measures required to control legionella bacteria within the domestic hot and cold water systems, and dental equipment.

Bridge2Aid: Strategies for better oral health in the developing world

  • Introduce delegates to the WHO Oral Health Strategy for Developing Countries
  • Be aware of the World Wide burden of NCDs (Non Communicable Diseases)
  • Demonstrate one approach, used by the Dental Charity Bridge2Aid, to providing Oral Urgent Care in East Africa

Safeguarding children with competence and confidence

  • This course will increase confidence in making safeguarding referrals.
  • It will help professionals develop strategies to manage the reality of discussing or seeking consent for referrals with parents.

  • Discuss the risk factors of poor working posture
  • Outline the symptoms of musculoskeletal disorders
  • Discuss and demonstrate the principles of correct posture and positioning
  • Outline equipment and exercises that can help prevent and manage musculoskeletal problems

  • To be able to modify professional practice and presentation to minimise complaints

Reflecting on your professional development plan: Keeping in-line with enhanced CPD

  • Discuss, with colleagues, the concept and purpose of a PDP
  • Share ideas about how to develop an effective PDP
  • Consider the role of reflection in creating a PDP
