  • To give the knowledge, understanding and practical ability to be able to successfully manage an anxious patient with particular focus to IV sedation with midazolam
Objectives
  • Discuss the current standards in relation to conscious sedation in primary care.

  • Identify what is meant by the term ‘conscious sedation’
  • Identify the indications/contraindications for Conscious Sedation
  • Understand the mechanisms of action, roles and limitations of Premedication, Inhalation Sedation, Oral Sedation, Intra Venous Sedation and General Anaesthesia
  • Understand the physiological norms and medications
  • Undertake the procedure for patient assessment
  • Understand the principles of safe cannulation
  • Describe the presentation and pharmocology of Midazolam and Flumazenil for use in Intravenous Sedation
  • Gain an overview of medical emergencies that may arise for Conscous Sedation and how to act upon them.
