This course prepares Registered Dental Nurses for the University of Liverpool Conscious Sedation for Dental Nurses examination. This course builds upon the knowledge, skills and clinical experience you develop in assisting in the care of sedated patients in your work place. The course will be held in Education Wing of University of Liverpool Dental School, between January 2022 and June 2022, and consists of 6 study days, the dates for which are as follows:

  • Thursday 14th April 2022
  • Friday 20th May 2022
  • Friday 17th June 2022
  • Friday 8th July 2022 – Exam date

There is an Information Evening on 28th October 2021 at 6:00pm-7:30pm at The University of Liverpool, School of Dentistry. In order to register (and qualify for your CPD certificate for 1½hours) please email Julie Brannagan (jbrannag@liv.ac.uk) before the closing date on Friday 22nd October 2021 giving your full name, practice name, GDC number and your Mentor’s details.

It is strongly recommended that delegates attend all study days in order to be prepared for the examination.

This course is demanding, but rewarding, and will require the delegate to invest a considerable amount of time in personal study and preparation work. Regular revision is required over the 6 month period leading to the University of Liverpool examination. Delegates will need support from the clinical teams with whom they work.

You will be required to compile and maintain a Clinical Portfolio. You will be required to assist during various aspects of both Intravenous and Inhalation Sedation under supervision by a suitably qualified GDC registrant. They will be responsible for assessing your ability to carry out various tasks either in your own dental clinic/practice, or at another sedation practice and providing feedback on your development. You must also have a designated mentor from within your practice, who will be able to offer support and advice during the course, and who can help with access to the relevant clinical experience. It is a course requirement that you have a valid ILS certificate for the duration of the course.

If you cannot confirm guaranteed IV/Inhalation sedation placements, giving details of the practices in your application form, your application for this course will be unsuccessful. Frequent access to managing patients under BOTH Inhalation sedation and IV midazolam sedation is mandatory. The Dental School cannot arrange for this chair side clinical experience. Application packs will be sent out in October 2021.

Course Fees for 2022 are still to be confirmed. The course fee for 2020 was £885. However, if the practice/clinic, in which you are employed, treats predominately NHS patients and is located within the boundaries of Health Education England North West there was a subsidy of £210.00 towards your course fee by Health Education England. This reduced the fee to £675.00 – Please be aware a subsidy has not been confirmed yet for 2022.
