Aims

To understand the requirements for maintaining the environment to control the spread of infection within dental practice

Objectives

Recall NPSA colour coding for cleaning equipment

List the frequency for servicing and maintaining ventilation equipment

Describe the difference between hazardous and non-hazrdous waste

Demonstrate how to carry out water temperature tests to reduce the likelihood of legionella

Learning outcomes

1. Describe and summarise key stages of the decontamination process, and implement effective infection control procedures to reduce the risks of cross-infection.

2. Outline effective strategies for safely maintaining dental unit waterlines.

3. Summarise the key issues relating to waste disposal in dental practice and assess own practice level of compliance.
