Aims

The purpose of the conference is to inform the trainees what their options are by using experts in each of the career pathways being presented.

Applying for an associate position in Practice

  • To Look at recruitment to primary care associate positions

Working for a Corporate V independent practice

  • to understand the differences between working in a independent practice as oppose to working in a corporate - the advantages and the disadvantages of each.

A Career in Community Dentistry

To give Foundation Dentist’s an overview of Community Dentistry as a career choice.

Specialty training

  • To describe to FDs the availability of specialist training and how it is structured.

Dental Core Training

  • To inform DFTs of the structure of postgraduate training and where DCT comes in that system.
Objectives

By the end of the conference, the trainee will be in a position to make an informed choice regarding their career pathway.

  • To Consider the requirements of practice owners and prospective associate dentists to aid job application and successful recruitment

Working for a Corporate V independent practice

  • outline the advantages and disadvantages of working in either independent or corporate practice
  • to understand which may work best for you depending on how you work
  • understand how you can progress working in either type of practice

A Career in Community Dentistry

To:

  • Discuss the role of the Community Dentist
  • Discuss the challenges faced in Community Dentistry
  • Outline the attributes of a good Community Dentist
  • Share case experiences

  • To describe how they are quality managed
  • To describe the process of appointment
  • To describe how academic appointments differ

  • DFTs will understand the options available for the next stage of their postgraduate career

Applying for an associate position in Practice

Delegates will:

  • Have a good understanding what to look for in a primary care associate position
  • Know what to consider before accepting an associate position
  • Know how to apply for an associate post

Working for a Corporate V independent practice

Delegates will:

  • understand the positives and negatives of different types of practices
  • learn the differences in how these practices are run
  • be able to make an informed decision post foundation training about what kind of practice may suit you better

A career in community Dentistry

Foundation dentists will understand how community dentistry differs from general practice and hospital-based dentistry. They will gain insight into community dentistry as a potential career choice, and understand how to progress within the profession.
