Aims

The aim of the course is to equip the nominated or deputising safeguarding lead person(s) within a dental practice with the knowledge and understanding of their key responsibilities in order to effectively work in partnership with other professionals and promote the safeguarding and wellbeing of children and adults of risk.

Objectives

By the end of the course you will have a clear understanding of the assessment and decision-making processes and a sound grasp of the principles and processes for effective collaboration. You will also gain skills in preparing for the Multi-Agency Case Conferences including how to write a formal report, identifying what is and what isn’t evidence-based information and how to challenge decisions.

Learning outcomes

Children

  • Child Protection Process - Joint investigation process and roles / responsibilities of other professionals involved including consent issues of children.
  • Knowledge of CP conferences and ‘looked after children’
  • Provide professional reports and contribute to inter-agency assessments, the gathering and sharing of information and where appropriate analysis of risk
  • Understands about serious case reviews/case management reviews/significant case reviews), internal partnership and local forms of review, as well as child death review processes

Adults at Risk

  • Understand Safeguarding Adults at Risk Procedures and the investigation process from alert to referral, planning meeting and protection plan.
  • Understanding emotional aspect of making a decision for another who lacks capacity.
  • Demonstrate an awareness of the main principles of the Mental Capacity Act 2005. Best interest principle
  • Understand the requirements of the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards.i.e.consent issues
  • Understands about serious case reviews internal partnership and local forms of review, for adults at risk

BOTH

  • Understand how your own values and beliefs can affect your work in safeguarding (support for staff and self)
  • Clear about own and colleagues’ roles, responsibilities, and professional boundaries, including professional abuse and raising concerns about conduct of colleagues Have an awareness of the emotional dimensions of safeguarding work for you, your staff and patients- explore the emotional impact from the disclosure of abuse
  • Other safeguarding arrangements e.g. MAPPA and MARAC and National Child and Domestic abuse Disclosure schemes
  • Best practice in advocating for vulnerable patients
