Aims

To help Foundation Dentists provide better Oral Surgery care for their patients, by improving their Oral Surgery skills in the following areas:

  • Assessment of surgical dentistry patients in general practice
  • Undertaking simple surgical procedures, fractured teeth and retained roots, effectively and safely
  • Being aware of, and where appropriate, being able to undertake simple third molar removal, apicectomies on anterior teeth, biopsy of small, non-suspicious lesions and primary closure of an ora-antral communication
  • Being aware of personal limitations in provision of Oral Surgery.
Objectives

Assess surgical patients

Demonstrate the principles of Flap design, Bone Removal and Suturing

Demonstrate principles of third molar removal, apicectomies and biopsies

Review common complications and their management

· Identify appropriate surgical instruments

· Discuss appropriate referral practice, limitations and patient safety.

Learning outcomes

Be able to assess patient’s surgical needs, and refer where appropriate

Develop their oral surgery skills as a general dental practitioner to be able to provide simple surgical removal of fractured teeth, retained roots, simple third molars, apicectomies on anterior teeth, biopsy of non-suspicious lesions, and primary closure of an oro-antral communication, where appropriate, and within skill set

· Review surgical instrument needs within a general practice environment.
