  • To provide an overview of safe and effective sedation and pain control for patients undergoing invasive or other non-invasive dental procedures
  • Overview of conscious sedation skills, training, continuing professional development requirements and postgraduate training as defined in UK guidelines
  • To provide an understanding of the value of pre-sedation selection and assessment
Objectives
  • Pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of drugs used for conscious sedation and pain control
  • Changes in physiological variables before, during and after sedation
  • Indications and contraindications to sedation
  • Advantages and disadvantages of intramuscular, intravenous, inhalational, transmucosal and non- pharmacological methods of sedation and pain control
  • Patient assessment for suitability for sedation, and formulation of sedation plans for their safe and effective management
  • Appropriate discharge criteria and their importance for safe recovery and discharge
  • Value of clinical monitoring, as well as the operation and use of equipment for the administration of sedation and physiological monitoring devices
  • Immediate management of common complications associated with sedation
