Mandatory: Foundation Dentist

The aim of this course is to educate delegates in the principles of first aid and medical emergencies including:

• Basic life support - Adult, child and AED
• Airway Management and use of oxygen
• Control of bleeding
• Fractures
• Causes of unconsciousness
• Treatment of burns and scalds
• Major/ minor illnesses and the use of emergency drugs and IM injection technique
• Risk assessments
• Use of emergency equipment within the practice 

Once trained successful candidates will be deemed competent to carry out the duties of an emergency first aider at work in a dental practice known as the " Appointed Person" for the purposes of the Health and Safety (First Aid) regulations 1981.

In addition, this course will also cover the use of emergency drugs and emergency equipment available in the dental practice.

Once competence has been assessed and this qualification awarded, the candidate will have demonstrated:

• All the skills to properly assess/ diagnose major conditions and injuries
• Management in a simulated environment treatment of a casualty with various medical conditions/ emergencies and give appropriate treatment within the parameters of their knowledge and training until more skilled personnel assume responsibility.
• Team/ scene management skills
• Knowledge of appropriate drug use for medical emergencies
• The safe and effective use of emergency resuscitation equipment.
