DescriptionThe course introduces Makaton as a form of communication with patients with hearing difficulties. Makaton is a basic form of ‘sign language’ which can be used with Children and Adult patients. Participants will learn the value of Makaton and will be able to use a number of dental specific signs and symbols that can help with everyday communication.

Aims
  • To learn signs from the makaton core vocabulary to support basic communication.
  • To learn Makaton signs for words and phrases specific to the work of dental professionals.
  • To develop confidence and understanding of the needs of those who communicate using Makaton.
Objectives
  • To begin to learn Makaton by taking part in active learning involving both formal teaching and practical activities.
  • To discuss parents perspective on dealing with medical situations with a child with communication difficulties and the issues faced.
  • To consider strategies and steps in communication that can be taken to help dental appointments run smoothly.
Learning outcomes

Participants will be able to :

  • Introduce themselves to Makaton sign users
  • Use basic Makaton for social communication
  • Use basic Makaton to discuss dental procedures
