Aims

To equip staff with the skills and knowledge to be able to identify, respond to, and report safeguarding concerns in child patients in dental practice.

Understand and identify what safeguarding systems, processes and practices are in place to keep people/patients/staff safe and safeguarded from abuse or neglect.

Objectives

At the end of the course you will be familiar with current legislation and guidance surrounding safeguarding children, know the signs and symptoms to look out for, know what to do if you are worried that a child patient is being harmed or neglected. You will be clear on how to respond and how to share and record information to safeguard your patients.

Learning outcomes

• Understand the legal and historical context of safeguarding children and young people

• Have a knowledge of the categories and their definitions, signs and symptoms of child abuse

• Know what to do if you’re worried a child is being abused

• Understand why and how to share information in relation to safeguarding children and young people

• Develop an awareness of solutions and barriers to safeguarding children within health

• Gain knowledge of the context of child protection within a health environment
