Aims

For too many patients, their anxiety persists for a lifetime even if treatment has been provided under sedation. The talk will argue that a treatment plan which includes both provision of dental treatment AND interventions aimed at reduction of anxiety levels will be beneficial for all concerned.

Objectives

Discuss options of anxiety management

Discuss care pathways in relation to anxious and phobic patients

Learning outcomes

1) To appreciate the importance of holistic assessment and treatment of the anxious patient.

2) To raise awareness of the range of behavioral methods of anxiety reduction, their effectiveness and limitations.

3) To increase knowledge of how to integrate conscious sedation into a holistic treatment plan.
